Step 5: Analyze and Implement Process Improvements

The 5th step is normally the most time consuming step due to the magnitude of analysis involved. The process diagram reveals sub-processes that require improvement or complete redesign. Each one of these processes would be analyzed through the "DMAIC" steps. Define What is the problem, goal, process, …? Measure Identify basic input and output measures for the process. Develop definitions and begin the measurement tracking to verify desired improvements are actually achieved. Analyze Isolating the causes of the "gap" between the goal and actual performance through analysis becomes the focus at this stage in the process. Both data and process analysis will be performed utilizing a combination of the Six Sigma tools. Care is taken not to short-circuit the analysis, while at the same time striving for rapid results. Improve Processes are challenged analytically and a new vision of how it should work is established. The new process is often designed, improved, and tested in a pilot prior to full implementation. Upon launch of the new process, the key measurements are monitored and improvements verified. Control The improved processes are in place, but must be monitored for continued success. The documentation requires completion, all must be trained and "sold" on the value, and measures put in place to track continued success.
